Byron Bowman's Models

Byron Bowman is a Salt Lake City native and a was a modeler in the "early days". Here is his story in his own words:

"During the '50s in my early teen years, I got the model car bug. Just gluing the parts together didn't keep my interest going. Parts and accessories were hard to find. So, I enjoyed reshaping the fenders, hoods, etc. with melted plastic that I molded and shaped into the look I wanted. Model car shows and/or competitions were few. I did enter my cars in the county fairs and won several first place ribbons."

"In my late teens, I customized my 1954 Pontiac and dragged State Street (in Salt Lake City) with my friends in our low rider customs stopping at Fred & Kelly's and Don Carlos Car Hop Drive- for root beer floats. Throughout the years, I have enjoyed doing custom paint finishes and pin stripping cars for friends."

In the spring of 1959, I found employment with F&H DuPont in Salt Lake. One day, an auto body shop painter came in complaining that he could not get a ruby red paint for a Volkswagen to match. Since DuPont didn't have a match, I offered to tint the color for him - thus my forty plus year automotive refinishing career began. Subsequently, I became owner of Superior Paint Supply, Inc. which specializes in automotive paint refinishes supplies and services. Our company now has five stores and a warehouse and is now exclusively a DuPont jobber. Not only has my paint been used on many customs cars, but also many manufacturers and industries have been using Superior Custom Colors."

"Drawing and artwork have been a continuing hobby all my life. I have taken various classes from university professors. My artwork has been entered in various shows around Utah. I also enjoyed gardening and yard work and find quiet enjoyment with nature. Traveling with my wife, Avonell, is exciting - I am always surprised where she finds to go next! Our children are also involved in our business."

Editors Note: Byron and his business have been a major sponsor of the GSL International Model Car Championship and the International Model Car Builders' Museum since their inception. Many thanks to Byron for his great help and wonderful support of the model car hobby. We are honored that his three custom models - 1958 Ford, Pontiac and Thunderbird - are now on display in the Museum. Each model is in splendid condition! Enjoy these models here:

A '58 Pontiac, a '58 Ford and a '59 T-Bird. These are NOT reissues!

The side view shows the delicately applied scallops.

The Pontiac had an interesting landau roof.

A top view of the interior shows careful use of upholstery material.

The T-Bird has Watson-esque panels.
